Supporting academic achievement through athletics
The signature component of our model is the Zone, dedicated school-based learning centers designed and resourced to support and encourage students to set academic and athletic goals, gain needed support to help them stay on track, and provide them with access and opportunities to explore post-secondary options. The Zones are staffed, managed and funded by Scholar Athletes, and are available for use during the day and after-school by all students, athletes and non-athletes alike, in grades 9-12. Services provided in the Zone are free of charge to the students.
A member of the Varsity Soccer Team as a Freshman and Sophomore, Cristian has been coming to the J.D. O’Bryant Tiger Zone for the past two years. During that time he has been a model scholar-athlete maintaining a 3.4 GPA and participating in O’Bryant’s Junior ROTC program. A very humble and hardworking student, Cristian knows the Zone is the best resource for helping him balance his academics, athletics, and other extracurricular activities.
Joseph has been a member of the BSA Staff since 2010, he has worked as a Zone Facilitator, Senior Facilitator and now as a member of the Leadership Team. Born and raised in South Boston he attributes most of his successes in life to participating in sports from an early age. After finishing a professional hockey career in Europe, Joe began working with the BSA and has never looked back. He truly believes in the power athletics has to influence academic success and build important life skills in youth.
