Boston Scholar Athletes

What is the Scholar Athletes Tutoring and Mentoring Program?

Scholar Athletes is designed to reduce the opportunity gap for urban public high school students and pursues this vision across school based learning centers called Zones.  Volunteers are at the core of this goal and play a key role in supporting Zone members in academic coaching & mentoring, health & wellness, and postsecondary planning for success on and off the field.

Volunteers…

  • Provide assistance to students with Homework, Test Prep, and Postsecondary Planning
  • Support the Program Coordinator by actively engaging with the students.
  • Make a difference for Zone members by supporting the core of Scholar Athletes Academic, Social Emotional, and Athletic support. 
  • Gain Skills and Tools through hands on training and direct service with Zone members and staff.
  • Commit at least 1- 2 hours per week to provide Consistency and Accountability for Zone members and staff.

 

When and Where?

Zones…

  • Operate Monday – Thursday during and after the school day from 8:30 – 5:00 PM (Hours may vary by Zone).
  • Operate from September through May supporting over 4,000 Zone members annually.
  • Located in 19 Boston High Schools and 3 Springfield High Schools.

Volunteer Support and Training:

ALL Volunteers…

  • Participate in a training prior to serving in the zones providing tools and techniques to work with Zone members.
  • Supported by onsite staff at all Scholar Athlete Zones as well as support from the SA Volunteer and Alumni Engagement Manager.

 

Volunteer Requirements:

  • Complete a Volunteer Form
  • All Volunteers will require a Background Check
  • Complete a Volunteer Training
  • Commit at least 1- 2 hours per week for a full semester
